How to choose the right beam angle for your lighting design?

Beam angle is one of the most essential decisions in lighting design. It defines how the light is distributed from the luminaire and directly influences the atmosphere, visual comfort, and functionality. Narrow beam angles create high intensity and sharp contrast — ideal for accent lighting. In contrast, wider beams deliver softer light over a larger area — perfect for general illumination. Which beam angle should you use?

  • 12° — Very narrow accent beam for objects, sculptures, or art. It creates high contrast and a small focus spot. Please note: the 12° beam uses a smaller LED light-emitting surface (while using the same reflectors as 15°), resulting in lower luminous flux. This is standard in precision lighting design.
  • 15° — Accent lighting for vertical surfaces, objects, or retail displays. It provides a sharp focus with a higher luminous flux than 12°.
  • 25° — Narrow-medium beam ideal for accent lighting in hospitality, residential, or boutique retail. It combines good intensity with a slightly softer edge.
  • 35° — Balanced beam for general lighting in residential or hospitality areas. It offers comfortable illumination with soft edges.
  • 45° — Wider beam for general lighting in larger rooms, retail environments, or commercial spaces. It distributes soft light over a broader area.
  • 60° — Very wide beam for ambient lighting. It is ideal for corridors, lounges, or rooms with lower ceiling heights where uniform light is preferred.
