What is mains dimming (phase-cut) and how does it work?

Mains dimming, also called phase-cut dimming, is one of the most widely used light control methods for residential and small commercial projects. It allows users to dim luminaires directly via a standard wall dimmer connected to the mains power.

How does phase-cut dimming work?

Phase-cut dimming works by cutting part of the alternating current (AC) waveform that powers the luminaire. The more of the wave is cut, the lower the light output becomes. This makes mains dimming simple and effective — without the need for advanced control systems.

Leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming

There are two types of phase-cut dimming: leading-edge (also called TRIAC dimming) and trailing-edge (also called ELV or reverse phase dimming). Leading-edge dimming cuts the front of the AC wave. It is often used for traditional incandescent or halogen lamps. Some LED drivers also support this type. Trailing-edge dimming cuts the end of the AC wave. It is a more modern method designed for LED drivers. Trailing-edge offers smoother performance, less flicker, and quieter operation.
